March 30, 2016: “Evolution and Anti-Vaccination Rhetoric” Second year medical student Ellie Lastrapes will present original research on the connection between human evolution and parental belief in fraudulent anti-vaccination rhetoric, such as Andrew Wakefield’s retracted Lancet study and Jenny McCarthy’s claims. Time: 3pm

January 20, 2016: “Neanderthals and Allergies” The article to be discussed is “Introgression of Neandertal- and Denisovan-like Haplotypes Contributes to Adaptive Variation in Human Toll-like Receptors”.

November 30, 2015: “Human Mate Selection and Evolution” The article to be discussed “Variation in human mate choice” by Zietsch et. al.

October 23, 2015: “Evolution and Zoonotic Diseases” The article to be discussed is the chapter “The Lethal Gift of Livestock” from the book Guns, Germs, and Steel (pgs 195-214).

September 28, 2015: “Cancer Evolution The article to be discussed is “Evolutionary Determinants of Cancer.”

April 9, 2015: “Using Evolution to Predict Outcomes of Medical Intervention” The two articles to be discussed include: “The Evolution of Gender” and “Current Evolutionary Perspectives on Adolescent Romantic Relations and Sexuality.”

Mar 26, 2015: “Using Evolution to Predict Outcomes of Medical Intervention” The three articles to be discussed include: “Fever,” “The effect on mortality of antipyretics in the treatment of influenza infection: systematic review and meta-analyis,” and “Turning up the heat: immune brinksmanship in the acute-phase response.”

Jan 29, 2015 “Infectious Disease Evolution “ The articles to be discussed include: “Within the Enemy’s Camp: contribution of the granuloma to the dissemination, persistence and transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis” and “Origins and Evolution of Antibiotic Resistance.” We’ll be meeting in the Lions Building, Conference Rm 3 at 4 PM.

Nov 20, 2014: Current Environmental Mismatch with Evolved Human Traits with Dr. Trenton Holliday The articles to be discussed include: “The Perils of Being Bipedal” and “The Natural History of Human Gait and Posture.Be sure to read the first paper! Oct 14, 2014: Evolution and Embryological Development The articles to be discussed include: “The Great Leap Forward: the anatomic basis for the acquisition of speech and obstructive sleep apnea” and “The evolution of articulate speech: comparative anatomy of the oral cavity in Pan and Homo.” We’ll be meeting in the Lions Building, Conference Rm 1 at 4 PM.

Sept 11, 2014: The Human Microbiome The article to be discussed includes: “Cesarean section and development of the immune system in the offspring.”  For a generalized review on the human microbiome and its relationship to disease and health, please check out this nice generalized review from the Mayo Clinic. Aug 21, 2014: Foundations of Evolution in Relation to Medicine The two articles to be discussed include: “Evolution and Public Health” & “Emerging Viruses: The Evolution of Viruses and Viral Diseases.”
